Fistulotomy
A fistulotomy is the most common surgical treatment and the only way to cure the condition of an anal fistula (a chronic abnormal communication between the epithelialized surface of the anal canal and the perianal skin). Anal fistulas often happen when you have an infection near your anus or rectum. The disease causes painful pus-filled bumps. When pus drains away, it becomes a fistula. This is an infection near your anus that creates a tunnel between your skin and your lower intestine. In a fistulotomy, a colorectal surgeon opens the tunnel to clear out the infection so that the fistula can heal. This procedure can cure an anal fistula but the condition may come back after surgery and the recovery can take months for your body to completely recover from this surgery. However, this surgery has a high success rate with a recent analysis showing the procedure cured 95% of the people who had one.
What risks or complications a fistulotomy might have? There might be some bleeding, fecal incontinence, and surgical site infection.
Anal fistulas are painful, they can affect your daily life, making it seriously difficult for you to walk, sit, or even defecate. If you have one, a fistulotomy may be the best solution recommended by specialized surgeons. Recuperation from a fistulotomy takes time and patience as your body heals.
A fistulotomy is a surgical procedure that can help with several issues related to an anal fistula, including:
- Pain relief: A fistulotomy can provide relief from pain, itching, and irritation, especially from chronic fistulas.
- Improved quality of life: A fistulotomy can improve quality of life by relieving symptoms like fever, swelling, redness, and pus discharge.
- Faster healing and recovery: A fistulotomy can help the affected area heal faster by removing fluids and pus, and disinfecting the area the fistulas occur.
- Reduce infection risks: A fistulotomy not only clears out the fluids, pus, and other unhygienic discharges but also reduces the chances of possible infections if not treated properly or in time.
- Reduce risk of injury: A fistulotomy can help prevent further injury to the anal sphincter, and keep your fecal excretion functional and intact.
- Reduce risk of malignancy: A fistulotomy can help prevent the progression of cancer or any other malignant growths in the fistula.
- Reduce risks of life-threatening complications: Leaving a fistula untreated can lead to life-threatening complications like sepsis or eventually anal cancer.
