Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is a weight-loss surgical procedure that involves removing about 80% of the stomach, leaving a tube-banana-shaped stomach. Sleeve gastrectomy is sometimes called a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. This procedure is typically performed laparoscopically, which involves placing small inserting probe instruments through multiple small incisions in the upper part of the belly. It is done to limit the size of your stomach and restrict the amount of food to be the proper and nutritious diet you can consume. In addition, the procedure improves hormonal changes that assist with weight loss. These same hormonal changes also help relieve conditions associated with obesity, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, etc.

Sleeve gastrectomy can provide effective long-term weight loss. The amount of weight you lose depends on your change in lifestyle habits of eating. It is possible to lose approximately 60%, or even more, of your excessive weight within two years.

Sleeve gastrectomy is done to help you lose excessive weight and reduce your risk of possibly life-threatening weight-related health problems, including:

  • Heart disease.
  • High blood pressure.
  • High cholesterol.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Type 2 diabetes.
  • Stroke.
  • Cancer.
  • Infertility.

Sleeve gastrectomy is typically done only after you've tried to lose weight by improving your serious diet and exercise habits. In general, sleeve gastrectomy could be an option for you if:

  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or higher (extreme obesity).
  • Your BMI is 35 to 39.9 (obesity), and you have a serious weight-related health problem, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or severe sleep apnea.
  • In some cases, you may qualify for certain types of weight-loss surgery if your BMI is 30 to 34 and you have serious weight-related health problems.

You also must be willing to make permanent changes to lead a healthier lifestyle like; you will have to participate in long-term follow-up plans that include monitoring your nutrition on your daily diet, your lifestyle and behavior, and your medical conditions.

Benefits of a sleeve gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy, also known as gastric sleeve surgery, can have many benefits, including:

  • Weight loss: Sleeve gastrectomy is an effective way to lose weight for those who are in an excessive obesity condition in the long term, with some people losing more than 50% of their excessive body weight.
  • Decrease depression and other certain life-threatening diseases: Obesity is associated with an elevated risk of depression, metabolic, anxiety, cardiovascular, and chronic inflammation, as well as some malignant diseases. Studies have shown that obesity is most likely to amplify the prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders, and bariatric surgery can effectively help with this.
  • Improve and promote better health: Weight loss can reduce the risk of certain cancers, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular disease. It can also improve or resolve conditions related to being overweight, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
  • Reduce hunger: Patients may feel full faster and experience changes in food preferences due to the resized stomach.
  • Improve breathing quality: Reducing the size of your stomach can help improve breathing or lung function and reduce sleep apnea symptoms accordingly.
  • Preserve stomach function: The nerves of the stomach and the outlet valve remain unchanged, so the stomach function is preserved and fully intact to regain the proper amount of nutrients or diet.
  • Reduce risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies: Food consumption returns to the normal digestive way, so the risk of nutrient deficiencies is reduced.
  • Permanent changes: The changes made to your stomach are permanent as the stomach has been reshaped and resized, unlike with other procedures.
  • Minimally invasive surgery: Compared to traditional open surgery, minimally invasive surgery offers less pain, reduced scarring, lower risk of infection, and less blood loss (hemorrhage).
