- Periodontal disease, often called gingivitis, is caused by inflammation not only of the gums but also of the tissues and bone supporting the teeth. It can lead to symptoms like loose teeth, bad breath, gum swelling, and plaque buildup. Treatment usually involves scaling and root planning to remove tartar and plaque from below the gum line and smooth the root surfaces. This helps the gums reattach firmly to the teeth.
